Iconal
Our MissionIconal Technology is dedicated to the use of new imaging, detection and identification technologies in security screening, medical imaging and industrial inspection.
Company ProfileIconal Technology has four objectives:
Particular areas of expertise are technology for security screening, explosives detection system and CB detection; medical imaging; industrial inspection; NDT; and, terahertz imaging and spectroscopy. Terahertz and millimetre wave technology for securityThere has been intense interest in the use of millimetre wave (30 - 300GHz) and terahertz (300GHz – 10THz) technology for the detection of concealed weapons, explosives and other threats. Electromagnetic waves at these frequencies are safe, penetrate barriers and have sufficiently short wavelengths to discriminate between objects. In addition, many solids including explosives have characteristic signatures at terahertz wavelengths that can be used to identify them. Dr Kemp is acknowledged as one of the leaders in the application of terahertz technology to explosive detection. He has carried out work for the UK and US Governments as well as major corporations and is a frequent speaker and author on the subject.
PeopleDr Mike Kemp heads Iconal Technology Ltd, which he founded in 2006. From 2002-2006, he was Senior Vice President at terahertz specialist, TeraView responsible for the company’s programmes in security, medical imaging and NDT. A former Managing Consultant at IT and systems integration house Logica, Mike has a wide range of business, commercial and technical experience from R&D, through product development, marketing and sales to the implementation of major systems. He has worked in signal, image and data processing, speech technology, medical imaging, customer relationship management & database systems as well as in security screening and CBRNE. Mike read Natural Sciences at Downing College Cambridge and was awarded a PhD in Radio Astronomy from the Cavendish Laboratory in 1978. He is a member of IEE, SPIE, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the NATO working group on Explosives Detection.
