Our Team

Abi joined Iconal in 2022, bringing 14 years of tech consultancy, product development experience, and a Physics PhD/Postdoc from University of Cambridge. Her expertise spans data science, experimental investigations, fluids and materials, and systems problems — from manufacturing processes to bias in technology and institutions.

At Iconal, she has worked on trace and knife detection, bag screening, biotech projects, and people and culture initiatives.

Outside work, Abi enjoys complex origami, make-up, singing and the occasional data project. She has competed internationally in powerlifting, holding several British records and titles, and volunteers in social justice.

Alice joined Iconal as a graduate in 2024 after completing a Physics Masters, specialising in X-ray diffraction, crystallography and condensed matter physics.

She works across experimental design, spectroscopy, data analysis and modelling, bringing together practical laboratory experience, problem-solving and analytical skills to tackle complex and varied technical challenges.

Outside work, Alice enjoys cooking, exploring the chemistry behind food and drink and experimenting with different recipes.

Chris joined Iconal in 2023 and has become a key part of the team, with a particular passion for health and safety. He enjoys tackling risk assessments and takes pride in keeping our labs and workspaces safe, organised and running smoothly.

As our Mental Health First Aider, First Aider and Fire Marshal, Chris is always happy to lend a hand and support the wellbeing of colleagues across the business.

Outside of work, he enjoys wood sculpting and painting and is well known for his year-round love of mince pies and sausage rolls, regardless of the season.

Dan joined Iconal in 2018 as a physicist and engineer with experience in applied research and technology development. He leads projects spanning sensing, imaging, electronics and machine learning, helping turn early-stage concepts into working prototypes and designing practical ways to test them.

At Iconal, he has built expertise in project and business leadership, as well as the science of detection and security.

Outside work, Dan is kept busy building things with his kids.

Georgie joined Iconal in 2021 following a Master's degree in Physics from Imperial College London, specialising in semiconductor and plasmonic materials research.

She now leads and supports technical projects spanning modelling, simulation, data analysis and the development and evaluation of sensing technologies. She has also developed specialist expertise in the generation and validation of synthetic data.

Outside of work, she enjoys aerial arts, hiking and cooking (with a love for spicy food!).

Jen has a background in marketing, finance and administration.

They joined Iconal part-time in 2020 and their role has since expanded to a full-time position encompassing financial management and reporting, office management and other operational functions to ensure everything runs smoothly. They also provide hands-on project support to the wider team.

In their spare time Jen can be found at music events and festivals, enjoying a refreshing craft beer, or providing a taxi service for their kids.

Jon joined Iconal in 2021, bringing more than 20 years of experience in physics, engineering and technology development. Before joining, he spent over a decade developing portable trace gas detection systems for military and industrial applications.

At Iconal, he applies expertise in modelling, data analysis, machine learning and systems engineering to solve complex technical challenges.

Outside work, he enjoys archaeology, classic cars, playing pool, travel, and maintaining that he's only watching Japanese cartoons because his children enjoy them.

Lizzy started out at Iconal during a project, as a temporary member of the team.

She was kept on as an assistant to the Head of Business Operations, and now helps out with financial and backend tasks, including project reports, chasing receipts and other administration.

She has developed skills in Xero, gained knowledge of tax law and will soon be broadening her knowledge by learning Python from other members of the team.

Mark joined Iconal as Project Manager in 2025, bringing a background in projects, product management and operations from the logistics and cycling industries.

Mark supports project operations at portfolio level, developing systems and processes alongside supporting portfolio management and managing individual projects.

Outside of work Mark enjoys the outdoors, with his ideal evening involving a bike loaded with tent and tarp, a secluded campsite, and a little bushcraft and spoon carving.

Mike founded Iconal in 2006. He led the company for 15 years, building an international reputation in explosives and weapons detection technology, and currently works mainly as an adviser to the company.

Mike has a PhD in Physics from the Cavendish Laboratory. After postdoctoral research in space science and in medical imaging, he moved into industry, holding technical and managerial roles in technology start-up, consultancy and systems integration companies.

Outside Iconal, Mike enjoys running, collects early radios and researches the history of technology in Cambridge.

Oliver joined the team in February 2023 with a background in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering. Since then, he has contributed to a variety of projects while continuing to develop his skills in mechanical design and software development.

His interests, both in and out of the office, span CAD, programming, electronics, automation and robotics, with a particular passion for bringing ideas to life through prototyping and 3D printing.

Sam joined Iconal in 2016 after collecting experience in atomic physics research, the Civil Service, and cutting-edge technology consultancy in the life sciences. Since then, he's built expertise in test and evaluation, R&D, and security technology.

Now one of the directors at Iconal, he's still motivated by doing good value impactful practical science that matters, helped by a reliable supply of tea and biscuits.

His dream of becoming a world-famous musician remains on hold, mainly because he wasn't very good at the guitar.
