We developed an innovative multi-sensor screening technology that can inspect bags at venues and events quickly, accurately and cost-effectively. Spectrohm saw the opportunity it offered to protect soft target venues such as music events and sporting facilities, and acquired our high-speed bag-screening technology to take to market.

Behind the Scenes
The Challenge
Many venues need better security screening than manual bag searches, but X-ray systems are often impractical. The challenge was to create a compact, affordable and user-friendly non-x-ray screening solution that could operate effectively with complex real-world bags.
What We Did
We developed a novel sensor-fusion bag-screening concept using low-cost, off-the-shelf sensors to enable rapid prototyping and testing. Through iterative design, physical mock-ups and public trials with security operators, we refined both the technology and its operational use. We collected nearly 6,000 bag scans covering benign, threat and calibration scenarios, then applied machine-learning techniques to classify bags as “clear” or “search”. The resulting system was evaluated at customer venues, demonstrating how fast, compact bag screening could fit into real security operations.
The Outcome
The project delivered a working prototype and strong technical evidence for high-speed, non-X-ray bag screening. The technology was later acquired by Spectrohm, who have since developed early production units and begun rolling out systems in the US, demonstrating the value of our Technology Transfer approach.
